Even if you are new to the world of using herbs and essential oils for non-culinary purposes, as soon as you begin, you will be doing your body and your home a world of good.
But where to begin, then? First, know that there are many ways you can receive the physical and mental benefits of using herbs and essential oils, and these are just a few examples:
-In addition to adding extra flavor in recipes, herbs and food-grade essential oils can stimulate your immune system
- Using herbal teas and therapeutic essential oils can help your digestive systems. There are great sources if you are looking to detoxify your body.
- A lot of store bought cleaning supplies, cold remedies, digestion supplements, etc can contain chemicals that can cause toxicity to the body. You can avoid this with herbs and therapeutic grade essential oils.
Herbs and essential oils have been used since the dawn of civilization. They have been written about in the Bible, and have been used to preserve and flavor foods throughout time. Although they were used in healing long before recorded history, the ancient Romans were among the first to study and write about them. Many of those writings still exist today. The writer Pliny, whose Natural History references the useful qualities of many plants, credited Mithridates of Eupator (120-66BC) with providing the research that preceded his own. This knowledge has been passed down through the ages, built upon, and honed over the years. So do not be misled by those who think that the use of herbs and essential oils is some kind new-age snake-oil!
Today, herbs are very important to modern medicine; heart medicine alone would not be the same without the complicated chemical properties of certain plants. A great example is foxglove, also known as digitalis, which is used to make pills that treat certain heart problems. Ironically, the plant itself is poisonous, but scientists have been able to isolate the properties that make it a life-saving medicine.
Given that we have perfected agricultural methods, and ways of extracting the best out of the herbs and flowers that give us essential oils, we are endowed with purer, more potent, and more consistent results. Therapeutic-grade oils are an example of such horticultural, engineering, and scientific achievements.
These oils are not what you walk into the health food store and find, you really have to seek out those that are labeled “therapeutic grade.” They are extracted with the best methods available, and are more potent and effective than the every day store-bought variety. You cannot expect the same results if you purchase inferior oils.
So, if you feel that you can be doing more for your family’s health and well-being, you can start with herbal supplements and therapeutic-grade essential oils. You just might notice that your kids are getting sick less often, you have more energy later into the evening, and that’s all of the proof you need that thousands of years of history can’t be wrong.
