There are many different types of Mexican cookies, including Mexican painted cookies, Mexican sugar cookies, and Mexican wheat cookies. Some types of cookies are designed for celebrations and special occasions and others are to be enjoyed at any time. Whenever you bite into a rich, flavorsome Mexican cookie, you will understand why these tasty treats are so popular.
Mexican Wedding Cookies - Mouthwateringly Tasty
Wedding Cake cookies are traditional Mexican cookies. They are made out of shortbread. Some of the ingredients include different nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and pecans that are ground. These cookies are very popular. They are served around Christmas, but also at Mexican weddings and anniversaries. Throughout the world, there are different variations of these cookies. Russia and Sweden refer to the cookie as Tea Cakes.
Tasty Mexican Biscochitos
Biscochitos is another popular cookie in Mexico. It originated in Spain. When the Spaniards came to Mexico, they also brought the cookie. They are made with anise seeds and sprinkled with cinnamon. Depending on the maker, some of these cookies include different ingredients. You might find some biscochitos with orange juice and wine taste for added flavor. The cookies are cut with cookie cutters or made into diamond shapes. Some people even drink wine while eating them.
Mexican Cochino, Puerquitos, and Marranitos
Cochino, puerquitos, and marranitos refer to the same cookie but the name changes depending on the region. Sometimes they are known as “gingerbread pigs” even though ginger is not an ingredient in these Mexican cookies. Marranitos are shaped like pigs and their spicy flavor is due to the molasses used in the traditional Mexican recipe. Mexican bakers make their own molasses by placing brown sugar in cones and boiling it with water.
Once it has turned into the syrup it is then added to the dough for the little pigs. The cookie is very moist and rich in taste with a flaky top.
Churros Mexican Traditional Cookies
Churros originated in Spain and were then introduced to Mexico. They are fried cookies, made from a light, sweetened paste. This paste is piped into hot oil and fried until it goes a golden brown color. For a sweeter taste, cinnamon is often added. Churros are delicious eaten warm and street venders make them on the street and sell them there.
It used to be hard to find churros outside of Hispanic areas a few decades ago because they were only available at sporting events and carnivals. Nowadays they are easy to find in Mexican grocery stores and local restaurants because Latin food is becoming increasingly popular with many nationalities. Some companies manufacture churros with an inner filling in a delicious flavor such as chocolate, strawberry, or apple. Many Americans have discovered the wonderful flavor of churros.
As you can see, there are plenty of types of Mexican cookies. You might like to visit a Mexican grocery store and taste a few different types. You might even want to follow a churros recipe or Mexican wedding cooking recipe and make your own tasty Mexican treats!
